It is that time of year again and what else would be on your mind other than Halloween? Okay, I am sure there are plenty of other things for you to think about. But if you have kids, they are probably already talking about Halloween costumes.  With less than three weeks away, here are a few ideas for kids costumes that are both easy to make and inexpensive.

The Little Farmer

Turn your little one into a little farmer. This idea is especially great for smaller kids who may have trouble walking more than anything over a few lawns to gather candy. The materials required are minimal. Most families probaby already have some of these items laying around. Borrowing is always an option as well. Materials used to create a little farmer:

  • A Wagon
  • Kids overalls
  • Plaid Shirt
  • Hay
  • Stuffed Animals
  • Bandanna
  • Straw hat or something similar
  • Boots

Mr. Quarterback

Funny, huh? Why go the whole nine yards with padding and a helmet to be a quarter back when you can be a literal quarter back? You can download the HUGE quarter picture here.

Print it out, then adhere the quarter printout to a piece of cardboard cut to the same size. Then stick it to the back of a shirt using loops of duct tape.

The "No Sew" Ballerina Tutu

Cut a piece of thick elastic to fit around your childs waist and tie the ends together. Next thing you'll need it tulle. 2 six inch wide rolls in any colors you'd like. Tulle can be found at most craft stores in a wide selection of colors.
To make:
Stretching the elastic around a pot or wide book, cut a 14 inch length of tulle from each roll. Stack the pieces and s imply tie them onto the elastic band. Continue until the band is full and Voila! You have an adorable tutu perfect for the little ballerina in your life.

The Car Engine

When I saw this costume I was blown away with the creativity as well as the price tag. For under $5, this family was able to create this costume using things they already had laying around the house.

They started with a large box. Then they cut out the arms holes and a head hole.

They then used plastic water bottles for the water neck and to imitate certain parts of the fuel pump. Smaller boxes were used for the valve covers, fuel pump, and the bottoms of coffee cans for the pulleys and old gift wrap tubes were made into headers.

With a little bit of paint and a variety of glues and tapes, this costume was taken from an idea to reality.

Oh "Smartie Pants"

I am loving this cute idea and it is so very very simple. All that is required of this costume is tape and a bag of the Smarties candy!

On another note, if you aren't into making your own costume but still need a inexpensive solution, I would try shopping stores like Once Upon A Child. I went there yesterday just to check out their clearance. That's when I noticed they had a pretty big selection of Halloween costumes for both boys and girls ranging in all different sizes. the little lion costume shown above I scored for $4.87. That's right. $4.87. I looked up the original price of this costume and it was around $42.00 on Amazon.com

So tell me, what are your inexpensive Halloween costume ideas?
