Amazon just changed the game.

Yesterday Amazon announced their highly-anticipated Kindle tablet, called the Kindle Fire. Priced at only $199, it enters the market at a very friendly price-point for most families. Some of the features of the Kindle Fire:

  • 7" touchscreen with extra-wide viewing angle
  • Fast dual-core processor
  • Free cloud storage for all of your Amazon content
  • Prime members will receive unlimited instant streaming of over 10,000 popular movies and tv shows. (They recently added several thousand Twentieth Century Fox tv shows and movies.)
  • Favorite Children's Books with full color illustrations, including favorites like Brown Bear, Curious George and Circus Ship.
  • Stream your music library from Amazon Cloud Drive to your Kindle Fire.
  • Millions of apps from the Amazon app store.
  • Connects with wi-fi
  • 8GB of storage and 8 hour battery

The low price point, popularity of the Kindle, and the reach of the Amazon brand means that this will be giving many tablets a real run for their money. But that isn't the only game-changer announced today.  They also introduced several new versions of the standard E-ink Kindle reader, with the most basic version starting at only $79!

  • Kindle, $79--this basic model is lighter, smaller, and faster than the current Kindle. It has built in wi-fi, a 6" E-ink display, and uses a 5-way controller button instead of a keyboard to navigate. It has 2GB of memory and a battery life of up to one month.
  • Kindle Touch, $99--this model adds touchscreen navigation and audio features. It has 4GB of memory and a battery life of up to two months. There is a 3G version for $149 that allows you unlimited 3G web/data access.
  • Kindle Keyboard, $99--This is the traditional Kindle most people are familiar with. They've dropped the price to $99 for the wi-fi version or $139 for the 3G version.

The Kindle Fire will be available on November 15th, but you can pre-order it now on their website. The other Kindles are all available now on their website.

I would not expect too many sales or discounts on the new Kindle Tablet. Amazon rarely offers too many deals on their popular Kindle device.
