Was it just me or did this episode seem to be more of a project-gone-wrong than Project Runway? Perhaps there were just too many "firsts" for everyone...both the designers and the show. Let me explain. The challenge for the remaining 8 designers still on the show was to design a head-to-toe look for an up and coming band, The Sheep Dogs. It sounded easy enough, but then come the twists. "Designers!" Tim proclaimed, "You are going to be working in two teams of four." Really Project Runway? Teams again? I am so over the team challenges! Enough already.
Let me not forget to mention, the band members of The Sheep Dogs are men. Big boned men who are inspired by the 1970's. When Tim in introduced the challenge, he was clear that just because the deisgners were in teams, that the judges were going to be focused on judging each designer individually and each person on the teams of 4 were to be paired with a member of The Sheep Dogs. I know right? I was slightly confused myself. Most of the designers who remain on the show are not too familiar with menswear, let alone have ever even tried a hand at it. But add in that these men are going for a look that most of the designers are unfamiliar with, and it just becomes one of those episodes that you just don't even know what to think. There was however, a pretty nice incentive to win. The winning look is going to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, in advertorials in Marie Claire magazine and will be worn to a live event where the band will be performing. The two teams were that of Team Harmony and Team Untitled. Team Harmony consisted of Bert, Anya, Anthony Ryan and Laura. Team Untitled included Olivier, Viktor, Joshua and Kim.While in the workroom, Olivier wouldn't stop complaining about the size of the band member he was working with. " He is BIG!" and "He is not the same size as my dress form!" News flash Oliver: I don't know where you have been all your life while designing, but probably only 98% of people match the oddly portionate dress forms us designers have to work with. Get over it. and as Tim would say, "Make it Work!" The one thing that really shocked me is that the designers oddly enough really seemed to get along this challenge. Not only just being civil but downright nice! Bert gave his extra money to over spender Laura at Mood Fabrics. Anya gave fabric to Kim, who was even on the opposing team. It was a nice change, and I enjoyed that there was more focus on the designers skills then their eccentric personalities. On to the runway and yet another twist! Instead of having the men attempt to model the clothing by walking the catwalk, they instead performed two songs. While it was harder to see the exact fit of the clothing, I think it was pertinent to see the band members in action. To help with the judging, fashion forward musician Adam Lambert fills a judges chair. ***Spoiler Alert***
Viktors winning look While Viktor was the clear winner of this challenge with his impeccably designed jeans and killer jacket, there were plenty of designers to pick from when contemplating who to send home.
Oliviers' not-so-hot look. Anya's "Pocahontas" look was horrible (and the jeans she made were splitting apart!). Kim also had a poor design but ironically, the menswear designer Olivier was the one who was send to pack up his belongings in the workroom. So long Olivier!
