So I am sitting here on this Sunday afternoon  ready to get down into the thick of doing some intense research on beauty myths, when I realize there are way more beauty products and myths then thre is time to write about in one day. In fact, it would probably take me weeks and that would be only if I were solely to write about beauty and the myths revolving around trying to look and feel great. With that said, I am limiting the beauty myth busting to 5 today but this is definitely a topic that is worth writing more about!

Myth #1: Continually crossing your legs will cause varicose veins and spider veins

This statement is false (thank goodness because I always have my legs crossed!) A commonly held belief is that when you sit with your legs crossed there is more pressure applied to your veins which in turn, results in varicose and spider veins. Not true! The most likely culprits of creating these little lines on your legs are due to pregnancy, family history and just plain old aging.

Myth #2:  You can repair split ends

False. Okay, so false to a degree. While certain products can be used to 'seal' split ends, they don't make them completely go away. The only way to rid split ends are to cut them off. To prevent split ends, the best advice I found suggested laying off the curling irons, flat irons and blow dryers and get a trim atleast every 6 weeks.

Myth # 3: Cocoa butter will prevent you from getting those dreadful stretch marks

True! Actually it isn't so much the cocoa butter, it is the massaging of the lotion onto the area of skin that helps prep skin for stretching. Meaning, you don't just have to be limited to cocoa butter. You can use other products such as baby oil or hand lotion. But to be honest, I think a lot of getting stretch marks has to do with genetics. If you're mom got stretch marks when she had you, you are more likely to get stretch marks during your pregnancy. (I asked my doctor this question last year).

Myth # 4:  Tanning beds are safer than laying out in the sunshine

False! The UVA rays you get while laying in a tanning bed are actually more harmful than the UVB rays you would get from laying out in the sun. Why? Because the UVA rays in the tanning bed penetrate deeper and are in higher doses. If you are set on fake baking, try using self tanner instead.Self tanners have come a long way over the years and if you put them on right, no one will even be able to notice!

Myth #5: Green tea speeds up your metabolism

This is kind of true. While green tea does have many health benefits, there is still no evidence that it increases weight loss.  Recent studies have shown that if you drink green tea in excess, meaning around 6 to 12 cups per day, it may increase the rate at which you burn calories, but you know, that would be consuming a lot of green tea!
The only I 've found  to really boost your metabolism is to eat small meals throughout the day along with staying active. Even if it is a 20 minute walk in the evening, it can definitely aid in boosting your metabolism.

Are there any beauty myths you've heard that you'd like to hear more about?
