When chatting with some of our readers over on the cincysavers.com message boards, someone had asked me if I happened to catch the episode of the Today Show that talked about clearing out 75% of your closet. I was thinking "WHAT? 75% is a lot to get rid of!"
Unfortunately I missed this episode but both curious and fascinated at the same time, I had to do some research. Contributor Jill Martin gave some great advice on the Today Show, worthy of sharing to all who happened to miss this episode as well.
Here it goes!
First Jill, author of "I have nothing to Wear!" said you have to admit you have a problem. Realizing that you have too much in your closet is the first step. Think of all the things that may be taking up precious room in your closet.
For example:

  • Items that you haven't worn in years
  • Clothes from high school
  • Stuff you bought just to lift your mood
  • Clothing with tags still attached that you may not have even purchased this week, month or year!

All these things taking up room need to go. I agree with Jill, they are just taking up room making it hard to find the clothes you actually will wear. If you have 20 favorite T-shirts from over 5 years ago, instead of keeping them in your closet, I would suggest keeping only a few and putting the shirts you decided to keep into a keep sake box to free them of your closet.

Step 2 of this process  is to then organize what you do have. Having your socks mixed with underwear that are mixed with belts next to mis-matched shoes just doesn't work well. I know  from experience through my college years.

Having a place for everything really helps when it comes time to put laundry away, or keep your clothing off the floor. Also, it can help when you are getting ready in the morning. Instead of tearing through your closet, you can actually see what you have available after getting rid of all the unnecessary things.

2 steps...that's it! Doesn't that just seem so simple? I have to say, I think this is easier said than done.

On that note, I think I may just give this closet decluttering a shot. It is Sunday after all and that is my day to straighten up and get ready for the week!
