When the sneak peek for episode 3 was aired last week, we all knew it was going to be one juicy hour and a half complete with drama, tears and nothing short of interesting designs. You know… the reason why we keep tuning in week after week! The fact that there was stilts involved in this challenge along with an outdoor runway was enough to keep me glued to the TV last night. I had a feeling this episode was going to be like none other. Boy was I right!
Heidi comes strutting out on stilts to introduce the challenge. As always, the designers are all seated alongside the runway, anxiously anticipating the challenge they are about to endear. Heidi stands tall (literally!) and states “Think BIG... Think REALLY Big!” A moment of silence was then broken when she mentioned that the designers were going to paired up to create a look for stilt walking models that will be showcasing the designers looks on an outdoor runway, all accompanied by a live audience and the press. Really? There were a lot of dynamics to this episode. Teaming up designers on Project Runway can either go really smooth or get intensely ugly. After all it is a competition and everyone is there to look out for themselves. Heidi then proceeded to bust out the famous little black button bag to start picking names at random, which is how the pairs of designers were chosen. The team of designers were then instructed to then work collectively on a look in one days time with a $500 budget. This is where the fun began. Bert & Viktor made up the first team which was like trying to mix water and oil. These two are both opinionated, hard headed and couldn’t agree on much of anything aside from the fact that they didn’t like working together. Bubbly bombshell Laura and Anthony Ryan made up the 2nd team. Both showing that they are strong designers based off the previous two episodes, these two worked beautifully together. Josh M. and Julie were a nice pairing but ultimately their look was not at all favored by the judges. Next up was Danielle and Cecila, who took it upon themselves to make an entire look out of chiffon. If you have ever sewn chiffon, you know how hard it is to work with and how easily their design could have gone from chic to disaster in no time flat. Winner of the previous episode, Olivier, was teamed up with Anya (You know, the lady who claims she only started sewing 4 short months ago?) then lastly there was Kim and Becky.
The final pairing was that of Fallene and Bryce (pictured above). I felt like they were doomed from the beginning as both have been just shy of getting eliminated the past two seasons. When it came down to the runway show held at Battery Park, the normal tears, excitement and relief were more present than ever. About half of the pairs felt confident in their work, while the others bowed their head in shame as there look took center stage, or should I say runway… Guest judge Kim Kardashian joined the resident judges in deciding what look was going to take the win and which designer they were going to send packing up their space in the workroom. ***Spoiler Alert***
I was happy to see that Lauren and Anthony Ryan won this challenge. Amongst the vast array of long legged looks, this was my personal favorite. I felt like even if you took away the freakishly tall stilt legs, their flowing red pleated dress with a little patterned shrug would look amazing. Unfortunately Fallene was the unlucky designer that was sent home and with good reason. Her and Bryces’ design was nothing short of disaster and with a rap sheet of having poor time management skills, I was almost surprised she even made it as far as she did. This challenge was much different than any of the other challenges I have seen over the years. Unlike the more crafty challenges, this one was straight up about fashion with just a slight twist. Ok maybe a big twist, or should I say tall? The only part I would have to say I didn’t like was the focus on Berts persnicketiness and know –it- all attitude as well as Fallenes lack of sewing knowledge accompanied by multiple tearful breakdowns. But that is reality TV for you. What were your thoughts on this weeks episode? Did you agree with the judges decisions?
