One of the biggest challenges of college dorm living is storage space. If your teen is organizationally challenged, the cramped shared living space can add up to one huge mess. While you can't install traditional closet and clothing organizers into their rooms, there are some options you can use--and they don't cost a ton of money either!  Most of these items also qualify for free shipping with Amazon Student. Best of all--if your student starts the year with a place for everything, it makes it easier for them to keep it organized all year long!

Hanging closet organizers--these work the same as the traditional closet organizer, only they hang instead of being permanently installed. They attach to the clothing rod with hooks or super-heavy duty velcro, and will help keep your student well organized. Here are some of my favorites:

Under bed storage--If the dorm beds aren't built in to the wall, underbed storage is a prime area of storage space that many people don't utilize to its full potential. Start buy purchasing a set of whole bed risers that lift the bed an extra 6" off the ground, giving a lot more storage space.

Bed pockets--these are large pockets that hang from the headboard and/or from the side of the bed. They're great for holding things like remote controls, mp3 players, and other small items that you might keep on a nightstand.

Over the Door Hooks--while these can be a real space-saving solution, be careful. Many dorms do not allow them. For those that do, make sure you take a look at the door before purchasing anything. Many times the hooks are too thick and the door won't close all of the way. For most dorm rooms, that can create a real security issue.

Believe it or not, I actually use many of these same products here in our home to maximize space in my kids' rooms, my own closet and for our guest room that doubles as an office. I have found the hanging closet organizers to be super handy, as they add a lot of stylish organization like the pricier permanent organizers, but are removable if our needs change.
