Did you know that you can make your own dryer sheets? They're very easy to make, will save you lots of money and are much friendlier to the environment. Even more, you probably have everything you need already in your home!

What you'll need:
  • Strips of absorbent fabric
  • Liquid fabric softener
  • Empty baby wipes container
  • deep bucket or mixing bowl

For the fabric most people will use some form of flannel--old sheets, pajamas or shirts. You can also use old washrags. Just make sure the fabric is absorbent, but not too thick. (Thick fabric needs more liquid and is harder to store, making it less cost-effective.)

How to make them:
  • Cut your fabric into three or four inch squares. Some crafters suggest using pinking shears if you have them to prevent frayed edges.
  • In the bucket mix one cup of your preferred liquid fabric softener with two cups of water.
  • Soak the fabric in the liquid mixture until fully soaked through. (About 20-30 minutes. Less for thinner fabric.)
  • Squeeze out excess moisture and store in the baby wipes container.

Some recommend storing the leftover liquid in a spray bottle for future loads of laundry. Alternative "recipes" call for you to spray a dry washcloth with the softener mixture before throwing it in the wash, instead of making it ahead of time. I prefer the make-ahead method.

You can use any tub or bag that will keep the sheets well-sealed. If they dry out that is just fine--the softener is still on them and will still work. Most sheets can be used 3-4 times before they need to be washed and 'refreshed'.

Using this method the average 40 load bottle of fabric softener will now produce 400 loads! If you're concerned about the environment, this would be a good opportunity to splurge a bit on organic products like Seventh Generation.

Let me know if you make these and how they work for you!
