Traditionally, summer is a time to vacation and spend time with family. However, with the slowly rebounding economy and the cost of gas, many families are opting to stay close to home or cut back on that much-needed family retreat. Not to worry, says Mark Murphy, travel expert and frequent guest on NBC's The Today Show. A summer family vacation doesn't have to break the bank.Murphy suggests that families on a budget consider a cruise or an all inclusive resort. "I recommend home port cruising," says Murphy. He's quick to point out that 75 percent of the United States population is within a three-hour drive of a port. "It may be easier to actually drive to one of the eastern seaboard ports, take a cruise and do a pre or post stay at one of those local areas."In terms of the all inclusive resorts, Murphy suggests traveling south of the border."The value in Cancun, Mexico is so unbelievable, especially for family travel," he explains. "You can take a family of four for about $300 a day, get two separate rooms at an all inclusive-hotel, all meals and everything is included. There are so many options and the properties are magnificent."However, if a cruise or trip to Mexico aren't a good fit for your clan, below is a list of family-friendly summer vacation destinations featured on Sunday Morning Magazine with Rodney Lear.
