One of the biggest myths I hear day in and day out about saving money is that you can’t eat healthy on a budget.  Even more, I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told by people there’s just never any coupons for healthy foods.

It just isn’t true!  Case in point: the Green Giant Steamers featured today by Kroger as their Deal of the Day.  One of the biggest expenses when trying to eat healthy can be buying produce.  But what most people don’t realize is that most of the time frozen produce is not only cheaper than fresh produce, it is healthier as well!  Let me explain why.

When produce is picked for the fresh produce section, it is often harvested before it is fully ripe.  It ripens on the way to the store.  It is then 10-14 days before it arrives in the produce department at your local grocery store.  But frozen produce goes through a different process.  It is grown and picked at full ripeness.  It is then flash frozen, sealing in any vitamins in it.  This means that it actually has more vitamins than the fresh variety!

Along comes Green Giant Steamers, which introduced the steam-in-a-bag concept for vegetables.  We all know that steaming vegetables is one of the healthiest ways we can cook them.  It retains more vitamins and uses less additives.  I love it for that!  But I also love that it is quick and easy for me as a full-time working mom.  I pull a bag out of the freezer, pop it in the microwave and in 3-5 minutes, my side dish is DONE!

I watch for the Green Giant Steamers to go on sale and then stock up on them, so I can really take advantage of the big sales like this CartBuster Savings Event.  I’m excited to see it on sale this week for $1.28!  Using the .50 off 2 Green Giant Steamers coupon I can get them for only .78 each right now.  This is one way I keep my family eating healthy, without busting my budget.  My family loves the green beans, or the Roasted Potatoes with Green Beans and Rosemary butter sauce.

So, which Green Giant steamer variety is your favorite?
