Let's debunk the health food myth once and for all!I hear this one ALL the time: if I'm on TV, I inevitably get some rude comments about my kids' waist sizes. ("Her kids must be 300 pounds!" If they saw my son, they'd know he's actually the reverse - close to underweight. My five-year-old is fairly skinny as well.) Last year my husband and I put ourselves out there and showed Cincinnati just how much we weighed as we switched to a fully healthy diet - and how we lost a total of 45 pounds together, while staying on a budget of less than $300 a month! So let's look at the facts of health food and coupons:There are more coupons for processed foods - TRUE
Why? Because there are more processed foods on the shelves than any other kind. It's simple statistics. Since coupons are a form of advertising, and the majority of products on grocery shelves are processed foods, it stands to reason that there would be more coupons for processed foods. There are no coupons for healthy foods - FALSE
If you've got a favorite healthy food, chances are pretty good that there's a coupon out there for it. Start by searching on the manufacturer's website for promotions. Some of my favorites that put out coupons regularly include Muir Glen, Cascadian Farms, Stoneyfield Farms, Silk Soymilk, Mom's Best Organics, Kashi, Rice Selects and many more! Also, watch the coupons section here on cincysavers.com - we even have Whole Foods coupons up there from time to time!Nothing I eat ever goes on sale or has a coupon - FALSE
You may not have noticed it yet, but it does go on sale. Most items will go on sale, or on clearance, at least once a year. Here are some of my favorite foods that I've found both coupons and sales for: hummus, goat cheese, Irish Farmhouse cheddar, proscuitto, organic lemonade, vitamin water, kalamata olives and more! Start keeping your eyes open for when your favorites are on sale. For example, I love goat cheese but hate paying $4.99 for four ounces. Periodically Aldi will have it for $1.99 for four ounces. SCORE! I buy several packages and will freeze them. Or Kroger will run the large blocks of Irish Farmhouse cheddar - normally $8-$9 a block - on Manager's Special for $2.99. You'd better believe we grab every one of those we can find! (There was nothing wrong with them, they just had a new shipment coming in and needed to make room for it.) Or the time I found Mom's Best Organic Cereals for $.99, with a $.75 printable coupon on their website. It doubled at Kroger, which made it FREE organic cereal! Even more, there were the free-range brown organic eggs I found marked down for $1.35 a dozen. There just happened to be a coupon for $.50 off that doubled, making them $.35 a dozen. (Eggs freeze very well!) Keep your eyes open - the deals are out there!Meat and produce NEVER have coupons - FALSE
About 50 percent of the time that I buy meat or produce, I'm using a coupon on it! Let's try this little exercise: head over to Ebay, type in "meat coupon" in the search bar - 112 results. "Beef coupon" brings up 72 results. "Chicken coupon" brings up 226 results. "Produce coupon" brings up 46 results. I use coupons on meat and produce all the time. In fact, the last two years, my Thanksgiving turkey was 100 percent free after sales, coupons and mail-in rebates!
